Separated from her father, forced onto a crowded and dirty train car, Lina, her mother, and her young brother slowly make their way north, crossing the Arctic Circle, to a work camp in the coldest reaches of Siberia. Here they are forced, under Stalin’s orders, to dig for beets and fight for their lives under the cruelest of conditions.

Lina finds solace in her art, meticulously (and at great risk) documenting events by drawing, hoping these messages will make their way to her father’s prison camp to let him know they are still alive. Last Friday Lithuanian business, art, science, social leaders have gathered to meet NASA astronaut Karol J. Bobko „Bo“ of  Lithuanian descent  for a cozy breakfast that was organized by GLL | Global Lithuanian Leaders in a restaurant “Vapiano in Vilnius.

Meeting with a world changing and inspiring personality was moderated by a businessman, lecturer, visionary, scholar, one of the 32 TED Patron’s worldwide Vladas Lašas, PhD. who personally invited Karol J. Bobko „Bo“ to Lithuania. Breakfast was also attended by US Ambassador to Lithuania J.E. Anne E. Derse, legendary mountaineer Vladas Vitkauskas, Vice-rector for Development and International Relations of European Humanitarian University dr. Darius Udrys, and many more global Lithuanian minds. In the breakfast astronaut “Bo” was accompanied by his wife and daughter.

During the breakfast participants heard personal leadership story from NASA astronaut, his career path, discussed on future of space traveling.

“Space exploration is highly important field in USA, European Union, Russia. It changes our world perception and expands human limits. Commercial space travelling is in our nearest future. However it will still take some time to become a daily routine. I would like to encourage Lithuanians to take part in space exploration programs. It would be a real and valuable input into human progress”: encouraged Lithuanian origin astronaut.

“Many Lithuanian scientists, engineers, or pilots have participated in Soviet space programs. Evaluating Lithuanian technological and scientific potential it can be confidently proclaimed that Lithuania can bring a valid contribution to development of space exploration and traveling. Lithuanian software companies known worldwide have already made contracts with NASA. Moreover, Lithuanian laser technologies would be extremely useful to European Space Agency”: US Ambassador to Lithuania J.E. Anne E. Derse expressed her fascination about achievements of Lithuania.

Vladas Vitkauskas legendary mountaineer, first one to raise a Lithuanian flag on the highest peaks o  each continens, presented astronaut “Bo” with his book “Everest – my destiny”. He noted that personalities such as Karol J. Bobko „Bo“ inspires to reach impossible in personal life of each of us.

Karol Joseph “Bo” Bobko – one of the NASA space shuttle program’s earliest American commanders of Polish- Lithuanian descent, currently SAIC Program Manager for the Aviation Systems Division’s simulation labs. Bo is an introductee of U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. Bo became the first graduate of the Air Force Academy to be selected to train as an astronaut and fly in space. During his 19 years with the astronaut program, Bo logged more than 386 hours in space and flew on three shuttle missions. He served as pilot during the maiden voyage of shuttle Challenger aboard STS-6 in April 1983, as commander of shuttle Discovery aboard STS-51D in April 1985, and as commander during the maiden voyage of shuttle Atlantis aboard STS-51J in October 1985.

GLL organized a Networking Night focusing on  dinamic values of  Global Lithuanians on 26 October 2011. The event gathered over 80 participants – leaders in business, academics, arts and community.

The discussion  “Values of a Global Lithuanian:  What Do We Share?“ was moderated by dr.dr.Edvinas Minkštimas, Board member at Global Lithuanian Leaders, Pianist, Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Juilliard School (Washington DC, USA). The debate panel included Mindaugas Glodas, CEO of Microsoft Baltics; dr. Vladas Lašas, Manager General “UPS Lithuania” and visionary entrepreneur; dr. Darius Udrys, Vice-Rector for Development and International Relations at European Humanities University; Mindaugas Kubilius, Expert in Leadership  and Social Capital Development, “Cezaris”  Partner and consultant, ISM School of Management and Economics and Vilnius university Faculty of Philosophy.

Kęstas Pikūnas, President of the the World Lithuanian Youth  Union presented major foundings of the expedition in Brasil “Lithuanian route  in Brasil.Lithuania in the making”.

LIF 2011 is one of the first events of its kind in Cambridge and even UK which aims at performing “multi-national” crowdsourcing. The event will bring together Cambridge University students of all nationalities, Lithuanians studying in prestigious UK universities as well as high achieving professionals into a discussion about the strategies that the Republic of Lithuania, as any other small EU country, could and should adopt in order to excel as a leader of its own kind.

‘We want to discuss and purify ideas about what Lithuania needs to do to become one of the leaders of small nations. It is pleasant that various other organisations are together with us to find solutions.’ – said CULS president Ignas Budvytis. Lithuanian City of London Club (LCLC), Lithuanian Youth Association in the United Kingdom (JKLJS) and also Global Lithuanian Leaders (GLL) with Dalia Venslovaite will facilitate interactive workshops, which will offer an exciting opportunity for the participants to brainstorm and actively express their thoughts on the issues of their interest and create a stimulating discussion with the others.

‘For the clear Lithuanian future vision, not only our own (Lithuanians) opinion is important, but also others, to whom it is easier to be objective. Sometimes being a bit further from Lithuania – challenges and opportunities are more visible’ – said the advisor to the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania and a student at the University of Cambridge – Laura Dzelzyte.

Serial entrepreneur Jack Lang and cofounder of Carbon War Room Vladas Lasas will share their thoughts during the forum.

Little or no knowledge in Eastern European affairs will not be a disadvantage as the most innovative ideas usually come from people who are not ‘spoilt’ by the background information. Representatives of the Lithuanian government will be informed about the results and conclusions generated by the workshop discussions.

Cambridge University Lithuanian Society or CULS is a voluntarily run student society dedicated to uphold Lithuanian culture and heritage, as well as promote educational improvement and social wellbeing of Lithuanians studying at University of Cambridge.

CULS has also hosted a guest lecture by a prominent Lithuanian thinker and a member of the EU Parliament, Prof. Leonidas Donskis entitled “Identity and Dilemmas of Small Nations in the EU”, and organised a joint Forum “Academia in Lithuania” in Vilnius (Lithuania) together with Oxford University Lithuanian Society and Vilnius University Student Union.
